All-Ireland Intermediate Hurling info   15/08/2012

Galway face Kilkenny in this years All-Ireland Intermediate Hurling semi-final in Tullamore on Saturday 18th August at 2:00pm.

The Galway manager this year is Johnny Kelly, and he is assisted by selector Jeffrey Lynskey. The two have a strong panel to deal with this year, with a core group of young hurlers joined by a few more experienced lads. Traditionally Galway would only field a team consisting of non senior club hurlers, but this time around the criteria for eligibility is that players must not have played senior inter-county in 2011 or this year so far. Therefore this Galway squad is probably better known as our Developement Squad.

Here are some stats / info.......

- The winning team is presented with the Michael Cusack Cup
- The first year of the competition was in 1961.
- The early years of this competition included not only the strong hurling counties, but also the not-so strong counties.
- Nowadays only the more stronger counties compete. This year's Championship is being competed by just 8 sides - five from Munster (Tipperary, Clare, Cork, Limerick, Waterford), just two from Leinster (Kilkenny and Wexford) and Galway.
- In earlier years there was a "Home Final", followed by the final proper.
- Galway have won the title on two occasions (1999 and 2002) while we have also lost 5 finals.
- There was no championship played in the years 1974 to 1996 inclusive.
- From 1959 to 1969 Galway competed in Munster hurling championships, and the only title we won down there was the Munster Intermediate title in 1962. That team subsequently lost the All-Ireland "Home" Final to Carlow.
